Where Will You Go For Content Promotion?

Obviously, you can see from my last 3 out of 4 posts that Digg is going through a major overhaul.  This will affect anybody that loves to promote their content on the web. Digg will make some big changes that will make it more difficult for the smaller publishers to make a name for themselves.  I’m sure you are getting annoyed with all my recent posts and attention on Digg, so this will be my last post about Digg v4 until it officially becomes public.  (I hear everybody clapping)  I’m sorry, but this Digg change is bigger than you know.

With the big change coming, where does this leave all the article promoters out there?  There are other sites to use but none have the effect that Digg has, at least right now.  But I see these sites getting more traffic once v4 is released.  That got me to think; where will everybody go?  Will they just continue to use Digg, will they move to Reddit? StumbleUpon? others?

Some people live off the effects of a Digg front page article, where can you find the same effect?  Sure other sites can give you some traffic to your blog but not like Digg can.  In my other post about pleading with Digg you can see that Digg has tremendous traffic and the others don’t quite match up with the “Digg Effect.”  Maybe that will change, maybe it won’t, time will tell and I look forward to seeing if Digg will make it through the changes coming.

Since the change has been announced people have gotten scared about what this means for them.  What will they do? Will they stay?  There has been a somber “treading water” type attitude going around the community and we are all just waiting for this to be released.

I felt compelled to find answers, I wanted to get some facts about how the community was feeling.  I put out survey and polled as many Digg users as possible.  The one and only question that was asked; “When the new digg v4 takes over the old, where will you go for content promotion?
Here are the results as of August 16, 2010:

Now this is a small number of people, especially compared to the massive user community of Digg.  I am planning to do a follow up post with updated results later down the road.  Also, I feel inclined to poll the community again once the new site is released.

Analysis

Be sure an understand that you can pick more than one answer.  This is the reason why percentages add up to greater than 100%.  One thing that strikes me is the 14.3% answered that they would be finished with trying to promote content all together.  That fact that 21.4% of people will be switching to Reddit and SU leads me to believe these are the same people moving away from Digg and are going to attempt to split their future time between Reddit and SU.

Just over 1/3 of the users are still going to use Digg 4 as their main source for content promotion.  Does this mean Digg is losing 65% of its user base?  Hmmm.
